” Absence of effort: So I can get the benefits of a hunter-gatherer lifestyle with less than 20% changes in my day –as I can manage a 5-course dinner at Le Bernardin, drink good wine, dress with some elegance, yet have the benefits of the caveman… To me it is mostly about absence of effort in my life, outside of intense moments, freedom, work without constraints, unpredictability in my day, lounging whenever I feel like it, minimal contact with businessmen & other half-men, etc. I spent 7 years in total as an employee. When I look back, it was half way between being dead & alive.”

Exactly, great way to put it. I would only add that you don’t need a fat bank account to approach life this way. (Ask me how I know ;–)

Ok, now that I read your comment, I’m intrigued. Taleb is a “flaneur”, how do we approach his life style without giving up all responsibilities or making a killing as they say?

Sorry David, I didn’t see your comment. After the first one is approved I don’t get an email telling me about it.
Honestly, I don’t know that much about NNT’s lifestyle, but I think it’s safe to say that his time is his own. And that’s what I was thinking about when I made my comment.
For me it’s about time. Having free time to do what I feel like doing is essential for my well-being. I spent a lot of years tinkering in a field that can have a very high payout (music, and still do). But, although I came close enough to know it first hand, I wasn’t one of the lucky ones (but music is its own reward). In the meantime I learned to do more with less. Keeping one’s overhead low is key. The house I live in is rent controlled. I’m not exactly a careful shopper, but I’m not embarrassed to shop at the $.99 store. My car is 20 years old but as long as it runs well I could care less. I have a steady job teaching two days a week. The pay isn’t university pay but it does qualify me for health benefits and provides a base level income. Occasionally some better paying work comes in which puts money in the bank or allows for a special purchase. I live near the ocean and can work out, run (sprint!), ride my bike etc. at the beach for exercise.
My situation has remained more or less stable for the last 20 years, (there have been some crises). But my situation is not robust. If it were I’d probably be reading more. As it is I spend a lot of time on and in the internet tinkering around some ideas that might have a payout one day.
Does that answer your question? How about you- are you managing to have some time on your hands?
