In the pre-monotheistic ancient Mediterranean tradition, people shared holidays and festivals (along with gods and shrines), a tradition still found in the Levant (in spite of recent acure mono-monotheism).
PS- Just figured out that the ancient Greeks ate meat only on festivals and special occasions.
